Pinhead Protected

Answers to the most frequently asked questions.

  • Locking component keys have an 8 or 9 digit code – the code is on the key (see images above). For your convenience, we store your key code in your customer profile when you register on our site. This makes it easy to order a replacement key and/or additional components keyed the same.
  • For convenience, we encourage families to key all bikes with the same key.
  • Os and 0s, 8s and Bs are interchangeable in the key code.
  • Replacement/additional keys are available online exclusively through Pinhead. If you don’t have a record of your key code, and did not register it, you can purchase a key scan below.
  • BONUS: The Quick Release key has a bottle opener. Cuz you never know when you’ll need one.
  • Please note that the Solid Axle/Thru Axle line, Quick Release line, and M12 nuts use different keys from each other and cannot be keyed the same. Keys will be matched where possible.

Pinhead component locks protect the individual parts of your bike that are most vulnerable to theft. Wheels and seats are easy targets because they usually do not require any special equipment to remove. Locks are installed once and remain permanently on the bicycle, even when you ride. Our locks are lightweight and aerodynamic – you won’t even notice them.

If you need to remove your wheels for servicing, or adjust your saddle height, your Pinhead key lets you do this quickly and easily.

Pinhead’s unique convex bolts are unpickable without the uniquely coded Pinhead key.  Our frame locks have hidden keyways, making it practically impossible for would-be thieves to get access.

All Pinhead components are precision-molded and forged from corrosion-resistant CrMo steel and aircraft aluminum alloys. Certain products have additional features, such as the City Lock’s nylon jacket that prevents scratches.

Original bike skewers are typically stainless steel, and may rust overtime. Pinhead goes the extra mile to chrome plate our skewers for extra long life and corrosion elimination. Chrome plating adds extra protection as well – it is harder than steel alone, and standard machine tools will be damaged if they attempt to cut through it.

Installation guides come with each product. You can also find installation instructions on our website in both PDF and video format.

Pinhead locks are proven. They have provided high-level security for your major bicycle components for close to two decades.

All parts are precision molded and forged from corrosion-resistant CrMo steel and aircraft aluminum alloys.

Bike manufacturers make a variety of wheel axles (Quick Release, Thru and Solid Axle). In addition, there are a few different sizes for Seat Collars and different Headset types.

Because we want the correct fit for your bike, Pinhead manufacturers a variety of sizes in each product category.

Here are a few simple options for figuring out exactly what you need:

  1. Check your bike manufacturer’s website for the specs. They don’t always list the detail that you need, but if they do, you can be assured of a good fit.
  2. Check with the bike shop where you purchased your bike. If they sell Pinhead products, fantastic – you can purchase from them and they will likely do the install for you. If they don’t carry our product, ask them for the specs. (And also tell them they should carry Pinhead!)
  3. Measure yourself following our easy to use guide:
  4. Order using the Pinhead Build a System wizard.
  5. If you need help with the process, please feel free to reach out to our helpful support engineer.
